The Republican Liberty Caucus of CD36 hosted Emily Kebodeaux of Texas Right to Life last night. Emily did a fantastic job giving us an update on the progress (or lack thereof) of pro-life legislation through the 84th Session of the Texas Legislature. The question was asked regarding how Rep. Otto voted on the bills that came to the floor. Emily informed us that, to his credit, Rep. Otto did vote for the pro-life bill that made it that far. However, the reoccurring theme throughout the night seemed to be that the bills Texas Right to Life worked with legislators to bring to floor never made it. They were either 1) delayed enough so as to have no chance of being passed on the floor, 2) altered enough to be made useless or, 3) just plain killed in committee so they never saw the light of day. It was my impression that the two biggest obstructions to pro-life bills were the chairmen of two committees; Rep. Byron Cook, Chairman of State Affairs and Rep. Charlie Geren, Chairman of House Administration. They both serve on the Calendars Committee as well. While most of us would be bored to death with the inside baseball talk about the inner workings of these committees the bottom line is this: these men are most responsible for killing pro-life progress in Texas. What should be pointed out now is that both of these representatives are Republicans. So how can two Republican Representatives be put in a position to kill pro-life legislation? They were appointed by the Speaker of the House, Republican Joe Straus. This is where the rubber meets the road for each of us. If we care about seeing Texas become a truly pro-life state, we need to care about who becomes the Speaker of the House. If the Representatives that we vote for will cast their votes for Joe Straus as Speaker, then they are giving their approval to the actions of his Committee Chairs. As long as babies are murdered here in the Texas, we can not be content with the hypocritical pro-life rhetoric from the Representatives that we vote for. One of the most important question for us to ask every candidate trying to fill Otto's empty seat will be, "who will you vote for the Speaker of the House?" The answer to that question will speak loudest if one is pro-life or not. In Liberty, Art Sisneros Chairman, Republican Liberty Caucus of CD36

Thoughts from our caucus chairman, Art Sisneros, on the recent SCOTUS ruling:
In the wake of the recent Supreme Court rulings, I have noticed a lot of buzz about the government leaders in Texas, Governor Abbot and Attorney General Paxton. I have heard of their courage for standing up in defiance of our overlords in Washington. As one who has been paying attention to what happens in Austin, I do not believe this is the case, at least not yet. Their language has changed a little (not nearly enough), but their policy has not. The courage to defend the people of Texas against the wicked tyrant known as the Supreme Court apparently didn’t get the memo that now is the time. Paxton’s own words right after the Court’s ruling on Obergefell v. Hodges, the same sex “marriage” case, betray the rumors about Texas.
